Report 2001: My Non Vacation in Antigua

Another full day of bed rest however, I was getting better. That was a big plus. By dinner I started getting a bit of appetite so I showered and threw on something and we went for a quick meal at Seabreeze. Tonight was their Indian theme. Although I was pretty weak the aroma of curry spices got my juices flowing. The meal was wonderful and satisfying and we returned to the room to look at TV. (Just a quick note to appreciate their DirecTV satellite choice. Although I didn’t expect that TV watching would be a big part of my stay, the situation made me appreciate such a varied choice of programming to watch while being cooped up in the bungalow.) Many of the restaurant staff were familiar with James and perhaps remembered me from the first night there. They would come to the table with well wishes and sentiments of being happy to see me up and about. I must take the time to compliment the Verandah staff as a whole. The front desk was wonderful about calling and checking up on me during my sickness. They really showed concern and I deeply appreciated that.

Throughout the day yesterday and today the Verandah staff would call to see if I needed anything and extended that whatever I needed just ask. Housekeeping was great as well, as I was feeling so bad Wednesday we passed on their services but whenever I requested clean bed linen or more wash towels they were eager to provide. I liked the fact that they came about the same time every day so we knew when to expect them and I love that level of consistency.

The first day we checked in the bathroom was overrun with small ants. James told the housekeeper and in a few minutes she was back with a whole can of insect spray which eliminated the problem with the quickness. We had a broken TV remote in the room which was quickly replaced by maintenance. The restaurant/bar staff was great in providing my husband with food to bring to the room and inquiring of my recuperation. There is no room service at the resort and since it is an all-inclusive they don’t encourage taking food away from the restaurant but since I was bedridden the wonderful staff relaxed that rule and allowed James to bring soups & fruit to me in an effort to get me to eat something and get my strength back. I reiterate I was very impressed with the Verandah staff as a whole and give a special shout-out to James’s and my newfound friends Sandra, Vera, Akheem, Akeem, Kyle and our first-day housekeeper (whose name escapes me now) as well as the front desk ladies who were so concerned about me and diligent in their follow up. Your caring and kindness mean more than you can imagine. I appreciate you…
