> SlowTrav > Trip Reports Report 2005: Naples & Sicily: Warmly Welcomes TravelersBy teezee from US, Spring 2012 Page 6 of 13: Lunch in SiracusaOf course we came into the city of Siracusa as the end of the lunch hour was near and decided we needed lunch before we found the house in Fontane Bianchi. We didn’t think we’d have enough time to park and take the shuttle to Ortygia for lunch (you cannot drive in Ortygia unless you are a resident and there are peripheral lots from which you can walk or take a little shuttle bus to the center). We drove past the train station and entered a pretty piazza just before the signs in the roundabout to Ortygia or the Parco Archaelogico and with an easy reentry to the autostrada. We saw a Trattoria (Trattoria Donna Rosa) and decided it was our destiny. Some days you get lucky! The lady chef was talking with a friend, the place was somnolent, and there was only one elderly Italian gentleman eating his lunch. Our hearts sunk a little but it was charming, small and spotless and it was 1:40 so we stayed. Donna Rosa (if it was indeed she) gave us the extensive menu but informed us with great clarity that the special was zuppa de pesce and it would be a good idea if we all ordered that. We did as directed and were rewarded with cooked to order zuppa de pesce that was among the best meals we had in Sicily, along with a fresh as could be tomato salad and marvelous bread. Donna Rosa was a little concerned that we didn’t order more but the main was enormous as well as enormously satisfying. We did not, alas, write the address but the square is right past the Stazione and not difficult to find. |
