Refreshments on the road trip

The second phase of our trip was a car tour of Southern Andalucia. We flew Vueling from Barcelona to Sevilla and picked up our rental car there, a five-door, Volkswagon Golf diesel. Plenty of room for us four passengers and hatch door access for luggage. We decided not to go into Sevilla, one day is only a temptation to stay much longer. Our destination for the night was Arcos de la Frontera, to the South, two hours away.

The rest of this trip report will have an element of appeal to those of you who love maps. I drove on many back roads which I name by number for those who wish to find them on a map, a highway atlas type map with more detail.

To avoid traffic, leaving the airport, I drove directly East for just a few miles to catch the new ring road around the bottom of Sevilla. It is not fully completed yet but it took us far enough away from Sevilla traffic to catch back roads. The "map-ophiles" among you will see this new road on newer maps. It is optimal to have a good navigator in the seat beside you and other alert companions in the car, once the freeway melts away.

At the airport they said we would know we were going the correct direction when we crossed the Rio Guadaira on the "Gaudi Bridge." Carmen, the native Catalana, was a little skeptical that any bridge or structure not built by Gaudi, could be described as such. But even she was impressed!

We continued, stopped at a road side bar for refreshments, skirted around Utrera, still on back roads to finally arrive and make the ascent to Arcos.
