Zagreb

We arrived in Zagreb, picked up the car at the small and easy to navigate airport, and headed into town. It was a fairly easy drive but hotels and streets are not well signed, so get good directions from your hotel (directions that include landmarks or something besides street names).

We stayed at the Regent Esplanade and it was terrific. Breakfast is very expensive though also very good, and you do get unlimited champagne. They had great deals on their website so it was a good value for a luxury hotel, even with parking, which was valet only and an additional €23 per night (I think there is something to be said for staying someplace very comfortable and hassle free that first night after arriving from overseas). We were there on a Sunday, when nearly everything was closed, but we still enjoyed the self-guided walking tour in our guidebook.

The next day, we were on to Ljubljana, another easy drive. Be sure to stop just across the Slovenian border to get your vignette — the toll sticker. They are sold out of a van in a parking lot just past the border.

We had read that a day was plenty for Ljubljana, and I was skeptical of that, but it was true. Frankly, a half-day would have sufficed. We did another self-guided tour, took in all the major sights (including the castle above town), and had two good meals, and had time left over.

We stayed in Slamic B&B, which I would recommend. It’s walking distance to the center, has free parking and breakfast, and was comfortable and reasonably priced. We had a nice meal at Gostilna As. Like almost everywhere else we ate in Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia, we sat outside — outdoor dining was the norm.
