Mom, Linda & Carol April 2010 to Italy
After eight years of dreaming and a full year of intensive planning, our long-awaited day of departure arrived! As an elementary school principal, I had decided to take our April spring break and extend it by another nine days to make this trip possible.
After some last minute packing adjustments the night before, I woke up at 4am, and left home at 5:15am to pick up Mom at her house about a mile away. Mom is 82 and this trip with her two grown daughters (ages 57 and 60) was her initial idea, although I have been dreaming of Italy ever since I studied Latin in high school. For the past year she and my sister, Carol, and I have been planning all the particulars of this trip, with a great deal of help from slowtrav.com (especially Trip Report #881 by Stella with her mother).
The beginning of our trip, home to D.C. to pick up Carol, began with bad lightening, thunder, rain, and wind during the night and it was still drizzling at 5:15am. After a wet, but smooth drive to the Orlando airport, we arrived at 7:03 for our 9:00 flight. My son Wes dropped us off with hugs and goodbyes at the departure curb. No problems with security lines. Mom and I had ham and egg sandwiches with coffee out on the concourse. The Air Tran flight to Reagan National in Washington, D.C. was good. We sat in the first row of seats just behind the first class section, so we had extra leg room ... so nice, even on a short flight.
We landed at Reagan National in D.C. at 11:20, and met Carol at baggage claim. We like this smaller airport section much better than Dulles! Springtime in Washington provided a beautiful bloom-filled drive along the Potomac River, as we made our way through McClean and Great Falls to Carol’s house. This was my first visit to Carol and Bob’s new home and I loved it! Such classic, traditional lines! Dogwoods edge the long driveway, under-planted with blooming iris, nodding their purple faces. Huge hardwoods surround the borders of the lawn, all leafing out in their spring newness. The back yard gives onto a wooded creek surrounded by natural forest. Very private and lush! I can just imagine seeing a family of raccoons or a spotted fawn peeking out of the trees!
Mom napped ... tired from such an early start that morning. Carol did some last minute wash, and then we were off to the bank for fist-fulls of money for the trip, along with a few other last minute tasks. We leave for Italy the next morning ... I only hoped I could sleep that night!
