Page 11 of 24: Saumur Market and Tank Museum

Saumur, Hotel de ville

Next morning was a Saturday and we went to Saumur market. We could park no problem as we arrived early. We then walked around the city and in addition to the market there was some other festival with cars right by the river. We walked around the market and sat for a café and croissant. We finally found an Orange store and it wasn’t busy, so we bought a SIM card. Incoming calls are free with Orange. Lebara has the cheapest rates on outgoing calls, but we used free WiFi for outgoing calls mostly. Free WiFi was actually included at our campsite.

I purchased a chicken and our son couldn’t resist a crepe made in front of him with confiture. As we still had time before lunch I offered a choice of visiting Cadre Noir, mushroom museum or tank museum. The choice was easy: of course it was the tank museum.

This museum had entrance fees and also a €5 fee for taking pictures. Not too many visitors were there, but the museum itself is very big and interesting. The biggest collection is of old war vehicles but also some more recent. Each country was also widely represented. We easily spent two and a half hours there, but one could spend a day there. They also had a store where our son bought two small tanks. At the end there were a kids playground with the models where he could sit inside or on top, and also in the last room some models were open for picture taking, sitting inside. Pretty impressive museum again.

We then returned to our campsite where we had a picnic with chicken, sausages, bread. I had also purchased herring and prepared it in oil and vinegar with onions, and it was delicious, and much less salty. All with good sparkling wine. We then had a swim at the swimming pool and relaxed for the rest of the day. Our son made a friend.
