We resumed our journey next morning but rather than going all the way to Sorgono we got off the train again at Laconi station and walked down a steep hill into the little town which is on the side of a valley. By now, we were more or less in the middle of the island and the mountains had given way to a more gentle countryside of fields, vineyards and olive groves.

We had chosen Laconi as a base for our exploring in this area, as the book had listed several trail-heads that could be reached by a short bus ride from town. However when we got there and talked to Rita, the proprietor of the Albergo Sardegna where we had booked in, we discovered that there was no need even to catch a bus. This is a perfect area to explore on foot with many walks starting right from town, beginning with the Parco Naturale Aymerich di Laconi (the Aymerich Natural Park), 22 hectares of exquisite woodland incorporating trails, waterfalls, grottoes, the ruins of a medieval castle and a grand Cedar of Lebanon tree.

Sant' Ignazio, the Capuchin monk born in Laconi in 1701, is venerated all over Sardinia and a special festival is held in his honor at the end of August. The flags were still out for him when we got there, in the piazza where his statue is.

Just to the north of town is a State-owned forest with wild horses who, according to scientists, are genetically different from any other equine strain and even have an extra tooth. Also, near the forest headquarters stands a curious, cone-shaped building with a fire-pit in the middle, like a tepee. These were originally used, apparently, for making smoked sheep's cheese. Laconi is surrounded by marked trails and we walked many miles during the four days we were there.
