> SlowTrav > Trip Reports Report 2027: September in SardiniaBy Marian McCain from England, Fall 2012 Page 9 of 9: Genoa and Home
Eventually it was time to catch the last blue bus, this time to Porto Torres, from where we caught another Tirrenia ferry back to Genoa. Arriving in Genoa early next morning, we had all day to explore the city before the train to Milan and the overnight sleeper back to Paris. So we made the most of it. Genoa is a beautiful old city. Lots of fascinating buildings, old palazzos, bustling squares, interesting shops and a vast harbor. The harbor held thousands of boats, of all sizes, from little rowing boats and fishing boats to the ginormous luxury yachts of the super-rich. We were exhausted by bedtime and had a good trip back to Paris, despite the discomforts of trying to sleep in a narrow bunk in a rattling, swaying train and coping with the less-than-pleasant toilets. So here we are, home again, with 800 or so photographs and yet another store of wonderful memories. Our love of Italy, its coasts and mountains, its people, its food and wine and atmosphere seems to deepen with every trip. And Sardinia—part of Italy to be sure, but with its very own specialness and charm seems to have won our hearts. If all goes well, we shall definitely be back! Resources |
