Page 1 of 10: The Vision Becomes the Plan
The Vision Realized
We wanted to return to the Alps, to the high mountains dusted with snow. It had been a few years since we had done anything more than pass by the mountains too quickly. And Steve wanted a new car, an Audi factory pick up. As a real fan of quality cars, he greatly enjoyed the research and the anticipation. The mountain roads would be just a jump from the factory pick up just north of Munich, and would be a great way to get to know the new vehicle. This trip was to be about stunning scenery and cool fresh mountain area. After a dreadfully hot summer this sounded wonderful. We had heart-warming visions of feather beds and warm brandied drinks, schnitzels and other comfort food. We wanted to explore Slovenia, new to us. And visiting family and friends in Venice was an opportunity not to be missed.
Thus a plan was formed. A month long journey through Austria, Slovenia and northern Italy. September 4 - October 7. We would begin and end in Munich, with the car. And we would use our AA miles to secure tickets through London. The logic was to book rooms for the beginning and ending weeks of the trip, but to leave some middle open, so that we could respond to weather conditions on our route. We'd spent rainy days in the mountains, and knew that they didn't offer much fun. If you can't see the scenery, what the point? We'd stay flexible, and avoid such days as much as possible.
In this report, I won't spend time on our brief days in London, as they were just for transit, and then rest and recoup. We were there for maybe a total of two full days before flying on to Munich. By the way, things were complicated by the Lufthansa strike on October 7. This was the first time we had ever been victimized by an airline strike. Our London hotel helped us with alternate plans and I've yet to settle up with Lufthansa. But that's annoying and dull stuff, and I'm not going to dwell on it here.
Now for the trip report - I will begin and end in Munich. I'm going to focus on the practical things, hopefully helpful to someone else wanting to visit these areas. Resources and photos are linked at the end.
