Page 9 of 10: Winding It Up in Austria and Germany

We fled Venice in search of the travel equivalent of comfort food. We drove for a few hours on the autoroute, west through Italy and then north up to the Alto Adige (Sud Tirol) and the Brenner Pass into Austria. The Alto Adige is simply beautiful, even from the viewpoint of the autoroute. I could have stopped there in some lovely spot and been quite happy.

We headed for the familiar - Igls, which is above Innsbruck and has very easy access from the autoroute. We'd been to Igls twice and knew what was there. A pleasant village in a glorious mountain setting, with lots of infrastructure for mountain hiking and sports. We got a room at the Sport Hotel, chosen because it had an indoor pool, and headed to familiar restaurant Agidihof, which had predictably fabulous traditional food. Goulash, pumpkin soup. Kaiserschmarm! We were very very happy to be there. We had neither the time, the equipment, nor the physical ability to take hikes there, but it sure looked wonderful. (See my review of hotel)

Winding it up finally, and very eager to get home, we headed for Munich Airport, where we would return our car. We would see the Audi again in about six weeks, shipped to our local dealer. We had made a reservation in Erding at the Hotel zum Erdinger Weissbräu. (See my review) This is a great place to stay near the airport, which is only 10 or 15 minutes away. It is a charming town and this hotel has everything you need - even if you don't care about their well known Weissbier (wheat beer, which we haven't been able to develop a taste for). Sure beats a soulless airport hotel. Though I'd recommend the Kempinski Munich Airport any day, soul or not, because it is so convenient and comfortable.
