Plain between Cusco and Urubamba We avoided the gringo airfare tax on LAN and TACA by taking an internal flight to Cusco on Star Peru instead. Newer Embraer jets and fine service. We felt a bit lightheaded getting off the plane at Cusco (11,200 feet). We heeded the advice of travel forums and headed for three nights to Ollantaytambo at a lower altitude (9,160 feet). There is much to see along the way. A beautiful high plain (higher even than Cusco) with deep red earth, green grasses, farmers plowing fields with oxen, and a glacier named Veronica are your backdrop en route from Cusco to Urubamba. |
