Artisan in Chincheros There is a big Sunday market at Chincheros (not as big as Pisac but I'm told more authentic). We were in Chincheros on a Wednesday so instead of going to the main square, our driver and guide Edwin took us to a small adobe room where two local women offered us coca tea and gave us a lovely demonstration on how they washed the alpaca wool with a soapy root before spinning it. They then showed us the array of dying techniques using insects, sulfur, plants, and even baby urine. The colors are vibrant and also permanent. They of course hope that you will buy some of their lovely knit wares. We haggled some and purchased shawls, sweaters, and hats. The quality was excellent and we liked buying items that these two women had crafted themselves.
