> SlowTrav > Trip Reports Report 2038: Peru with KidsBy ktp from California, Fall 2012 Page 8 of 14: Ollantaytambo and Horseback RidingAndean people in Ollanta Our Hostal Iskay in Ollantaytambo (Ollanta for short) had beautiful gardens, a lovely view of the ruins, two resident cats (michis) that our children fell in love with, and a cuy pen where you could pick the guinea pig you wished to eat (we skipped that). Today we explored old town which was built by the Incas and has been continuously inhabited ever since - charming cobblestone streets with channels of water running down the middle or side. One courtyard on Calle Medio beckoned us in with baby chicks (we are suckers). The houses surrounding the courtyard had cuy running loose, a mummified baby alpaca, human skulls, and blackened interior walls from the continuous fire burning. In the afternoon, my daughter and I took a half day horseback tour of the Yanahuara valley (en route to Lares Hot Springs) on paso horses through KB Tambo Tours. It was a gorgeous ride (rated beginner but I recommend basic horse skills) with multiple water crossings. The only traffic encountered was a bull and four small donkeys carrying fire wood. |
