Mississippi River at last We are finally on the Mississippi River in Hannibal. We left St. Joseph this morning after another great breakfast from the Museum Hill B&B. On the way out of town we stopped at the Glore Psychiatric Hospital Museum and as we have said to several people, we're glad we didn't have psychiatric problems back in the 17th or 18th century. We'll spare you any pictures (and we did take some) but it was a real eye opener as to how far psychiatric medicine has come. We stopped in Chillicothe, MO for lunch and found out that it was the first place back in 1928 to sell sliced bread. Another bit of trivia for you trivia fans! It's really a cute town with lots of Victorian store fronts once you get off the main drag (read that as once you get lost!). We pushed toward Hannibal and got here before dark. After checking into our B&B we made our way to Riverview Park which, as you might have guessed, has river-view overlooks. It's really a lovely area with lots of people out walking and the trees are changing colors right now. Being from New Orleans where the trees never change colors, I can not get enough of Autumn's beauty. We took one more ride to the other side of Hannibal to an overlook called Lovers' Leap, the apocryphal two lovers with fathers who hate each other, blah, blah, blah ... but a beautiful view of the Mississippi! We then ate dinner in an old bordello Lulabelle's. Tomorrow is Mark Twain exploration day for us. We are looking forward to a day of Tom, Huck, and Becky. |
