The Castelbianco Area

Our son who work for Novartis Pharma was to be on a one year International assignment in Basel/Huningue this year so when I saw good fares to Zurich earlier this year (SFO to Zurich direct flight on UA/Swiss Air) I grabbed the tickets for our usual May shoulder season vacation break. By April, it was apparent that our son was not going to be in Basel so I sprung into Plan B. As usual my roommate from college in India was planning to be in Nice with her husband for his annual sabbatical at the Observatoire in Nice (the big white dome above Nice). But her aging mom had just had a major surgery back in February and she was not sure she could leave her mom. Since we had been to Nice several times, I did not want to spend a week in Nice if she was not there. We wanted a place drivable distance from Zurich for a week since we wanted to spend the second week in Interlaken that we had always saved for ‘next time’, and yet close enough to Nice in case my friend could make it. I had always wanted to stay in a Agritourismo in Italy and we had never been to the Italian Riviera adjacent to the French Riviera. So balancing distances and our plans we zeroed in on Casa dei Nonni Agritourismo that met our needs for rural area, good hikes, restaurants nearby etc. and close enough to Nice. All the reviews you can find online is true and more; it is an ideal place for a weeks rural get away and yet close enough for several day trips and hikes.

For the second week we had four days to spend in Interlaken, after a day at Lake Como, and I booked the Apartment Stockli in Lautebrunnen based on the ST reviews. But that will be a separate trip report.
