On the way to Mont St Michel

I'm almost feeling guilty to post this section of our 50th anniversary trip report, because the second week of our time in France was in no way slow travel. We had four overnight stops in six days -- not at all the way we normally travel, and in fact not the way we had first mapped out this trip. But because of a last-minute disruption of plans we were left with an unbooked week between Paris and the Dordogne, where we had originally planned to spend two weeks.

We'd never been north of Paris in eight past trips to France, because we've always traveled more off-season. Until two years ago we were living in New England, where we had more cold weather than we ever wanted. So we tried to plan our trips to Europe to escape some of the worst of the long Boston winters. The colder parts of France, despite their many attractions, had a lot less appeal for us than the sunny south.

Now here we were, going to France in June to celebrate our anniversary, we had an open week, and it seemed like a good opportunity to head north. But there were so many places we really wanted to see, that we went for the "let's cover a lot of ground and check a few things off the bucket list" approach.

I'm not sorry we went to the places we did, because every one of them was wonderful in its own way, and I don't know if we'll ever get back to those areas again. We brought home some amazing memories and I wouldn't have missed any of the stops we made -- but I don't think we're going to be traveling like that another time. We found out for sure how much happier we are when slow traveling.
