Foie gras and jellied Monbazillac -- great Dordogne memory

It might seem as if our time in the Dordogne was mostly spent lazing about and eating. That wouldn't be far wrong, but this was our third trip to the area, and we'd already done plenty of castles, caves, canoeing, and village-hopping. So after the big-city vibe of Paris and our whirlwind tour on the northern route, we were ready for a week of downtime. And really, you can't find many places more conducive to taking it easy and eating lots of fabulous food amidst beautiful scenery than Southwestern France.

We were glad we'd been to most of the tourist honeypots on our previous trips in spring and fall. At least late June was just on the cusp of high season, and we did find plenty of places we could enjoy away from crowds. And our home village Monpazier was far enough away from the thick of things that it was never overrun with day-trippers.

We also discovered a couple of advantages to visiting this time of year. One was the terrific night markets, which don't start until late June. Another (although we barely took advantage of it) was the sale season. If you're into shopping, you can certainly find some great bargains in the bigger stores during the summer sales.

Bottom line -- I don't think there's really any bad time to visit la belle France. We'll definitely be back!
