This was a two-week trip centered on Southern Tuscany, geared to the requirements of my traveling companion, my 86-year-old mother. She is ambulatory in a limited sort of way, more keen on beautiful countryside than on the hustle and bustle of town and city life, appreciative enough of art and architecture in small doses. She'd always longed to travel, but had never in her life been to continental Europe (my father never really wanted to go anyplace where English wasn't spoken). On my three previous visits to Italy I'd never seen southern Tuscany, but from what I'd learned it seemed to meet our requirements perfectly, and would be a good place to visit in late April.

My planning for this trip was much more time-consuming and obsessive than usual, and fortunately it led me to discover the Slow Travel website and message board. The advice and information I got here made a huge difference in making possible a hugely successful trip, one in which all of the surprises were pleasant ones.
