Pamela awoke feeling dreadful (couldn’t possibly have been a hangover… but, there again…). Both pretty tired, we dragged ourselves to classes. Pamela’s fortunately finished at 10 allowing a return to bed with some medication. And after skipping the 5 p.m. class, she was just coming good when it was time to leave for the planned birthday dinner at Dal mi Cocco (whose reputation for typical Umbrian fare we’d heard of from several sources). It’s a family place, rustic and with a menu of many courses, specific for each day of the week.

Joining us were Annie and Helen, Maureen, and Debbie and Roland. Suzanna had recovered less well than Pamela from last night’s festivities and reluctantly had to bow out. Leo was our waiter and he was full of fun and molto simpatico. Having apparently learned of the occasion being celebrated, he arranged for the lights to be dimmed when dessert was brought in, surmounted by a flaming candle, and the whole restaurant joined in with “Tanti auguri a te”. It was great fun – not surprisingly, we were the last to leave – and they presented us all with a range of small souvenirs of the restaurant, and also, for the birthday girl, a bottle of vin santo.

Birthday presents included a cute little bowl (from Deruta) from Suzanna, some Baci chocolates from Debbie and Roland, and also some from Pam and Gary, and a lovely birthday book in Italian ‘Il 16 Settembre’ from Annie and Helen. As arranged, a present was also chosen from Eileen – a small bronze statue of l’Ombra della Sera, the original of which, we were told, is in the museum in Volterra. (And when we unexpectedly found ourselves there much later in the trip, the statue was unfortunately away on loan in the US, with a copy in its place… damn!)

We fortunately found out today, when we rang Margaret, that she had everything under control. She had booked into Hotel Priori and would be arriving by train from Florence at 1 o’clock Friday.
