Page 17 of 31: Thursday 17th September

Continuing the established pattern, today was a typical Thursday. Finishing together at 1 o’clock at Palazzina Prosciutti, we walked back a different way and found the ascensore (the escalator cleverly hidden inside the galleria that cuts through the base of Perugia) which took us straight up through the rock to the covered markets where we bought some pasta messicana (a type of ravioli shaped like mexican hats) for dinner.

On the way back through Piazza Cavallotti we happened upon a metal staircase leading underground through an opening in the pavement, within which were extensive Roman remains including a fountain and a road surface with chariot ruts. In the poor visibility Pamela missed a step and suffered a bruised shin. Despite many subsequent attempts to revisit it for a closer inspection, we never again found it open. We almost began to wonder if we’d been in a time warp, though there was definitely a metal cover in the pavement to reassure us that we’d not imagined the whole experience.
