In June and July of 2004 my husband and I travelled to Italy. We travelled to: Rome -> Siena (for the Palio) -> Verona (to see the opera) -> Venice -> Florence -> Assisi -> Sorrento (and the Amalfi coast) -> Rome

We got around by train (and scooter on the Amalfi coast). The places we stayed in were inexpensive-moderately priced (for Italy in high season!). To us, location and the sometimes quirky ambience that comes with less-frills accommodations was more important than hotel accoutrements or breakfasts; we were more than happy to down our morning espressos and cornettos at the bar of our local caffé, to use shared bathrooms and to trudge our (increasingly heavier thanks to my obsession with objet d’art – like metal sculptures in Assisi!) luggage up flights of stairs (our efforts often resulted in a great view – like that of the bulbed cupolas of Basilica di San Marco in Venice). Our rooms were places for us to siesta in the afternoon and sleep at night, allowing us to get out into the fabric of our destination and explore.

This is less of a blow-by-blow trip report, and more of a collection of my most stand-out impressions of my first trip to Italy, including accommodation, food, art and sensory memories.
