Friday, August 6:
We have a direct flight from JFK to Paris. From there we take an Air France flight to Nice. We get to JFK early, only to find out that Rick James has died. Being from Buffalo, this is really big news. The flight to Paris is uneventful. It is once we arrive to Charles De Gaulle that we run into problems.
All four of us had free tickets on AA to Paris, thanks to the AA special offer of fly three times from NYC to FLA get a free ticket anywhere AA flies. We jumped on that as soon as they announced it. We purchased our Air France tickets online. I purchased three of the tickets together and the final one for my brother about 4 days later. Two weeks after booking the first three tickets we finally got an email confirmation of the booking. I never got confirmation for my brother's ticket. I called AF repeatedly and was told he was booked. And my cc statement showed the purchase. When we get to Paris, we go to check in and he has no ticket. We get sent to three different counters before being sent to a special booking area. They look up the booking by name and by cc and can’t find it. This is my brother's first international trip and he keeps saying “looks like I better go to AA and tell them they need to get me back to the US now”. I tell him if we have to he and I will take the train to Nice. The woman tells me there is room on the flights and we can buy a new ticket, and then get reimbursed when I get back to NY and can provide proof that I have already booked this ticket. So I take a deep breath expecting it to be some outrageous price. Surprisingly it is about $400. Phew! We get right on the plane just in case it is overbooked and they want people to deplane.
We get to Nice, take the bus to the city center and walk over to our rental apartment. We have an hour before we can get in so we go get crepes. They are by far the worst crepes I have ever had anywhere. Bummer. At four we go and meet Mignane to get into the apartment. The apartment is nice, just much closer to the train station than we were led to believe. Oh well, what can you do.
It’s our first day and we are beat. After napping we go out and walk to the Cours Saleya for dinner. We find a very pleasant restaurant and have a tasty meal of pizzas and white wine. Afterwards, we wander around the square and go for a beer in the Thor Pub. It is your typical Irish pub filled with staff from all over Europe.
