Report 663: Paris and Burgundy - 2 Beginner Travelers

Trip Description: June 14-25, 2005 Vauchignon June 18. Three nights in Paris; a day in Beaune; a week in a Vauchignon B&B, here's a brief overview of our trip.

We've arrived!

This was our first ever trip to Europe, and we were relying on my brushed up high school French. (Chuck took Latin.)

We departed Baltimore in the evening via Icelandair. A nice lady upgraded us to business class. Could it be because we dressed up? Had a quick stop in Reykjavik and on to Paris with no delays. I loved seeing a bit of Iceland from the air; the houses we saw were white or ivory with bright red, green or blue roofs. It looks for all the world like a child's playset. I was further captivated by the patchwork of fields as we entered French air space on the approach to Paris. It is beautiful country. Lots of fields and open space, with buildings confined mostly to towns, so the landscape is unmarred.

At Charles de Gaulle, the expected Roissy bus failed to appear, so we teamed with other people to take a van to Paris Opera Garnier. From there, it was an easy Metro ride to Ecole Militaire. As we left Metro, we got a little turned around, but soon made our way to L'Hotel du Champ de Mars. This put us in walking distance from the Eiffel Tower.
