Melbourne in winter can be cold (for Australia), wet and miserable, so when one's overworked friend rings and asks whether one would like to go to Airlie Beach, in Queensland, there is really only one answer: a very enthusiastic yes.

Airlie Beach, with Shute Harbour down the road, is the traditional mainland departure point for the Whitsunday Islands, part of the Great Barrier Reef off central Queensland.
