A significant birthday was looming in January. I believe that every birthday is significant, so hadn’t thought too much about it. My husband Michael, however, was already making noises in June about a party in January. I would rather spend party money on travel, so I requested that he take me to London for a week instead. He is not a big city person, so this would truly be a gift. And that was the plan, until I read an article in the New York Times about Buenos Aires. The article pointed out that Buenos Aires is very affordable, very Italian, and we could tango to our hearts’ content. (We love to dance, and had seen every tango-oriented show and movie.) So I thought, “Hmmm… London in January – very expensive, damp and cold. Buenos Aires in December – inexpensive and warm.” It was not a difficult decision. We had never put South America on our travel list, preferring to spend travel time with repeat trips to Italy, but somehow this seemed just right.

Lo and behold, our very dear friends Linda and Dick decided that it sounded like a swell adventure and they’d come with us. Our usual planning involves just the two of us, a rental car, apartments, and six to nine weeks in Italy. So not only would we be going to a place we’d never planned on, but we’d be traveling with friends for two weeks, something we’d never done before. I decided that doing something completely different prior to a “significant” birthday is a good thing.

The exchange rate was about three AR$ to one US$. All prices for meals, unless otherwise indicated, are for two, usually with wine.
