Report 713: A Weekend in Venice for the Biennale

Page 4 of 4: Day Three: Departures

Sunday

I have to get up early and go to the airport. I arrive in style and am leaving in a decidedly less glamorous manner by taking the vaparetto to the airport bus. It is rush hour on the vaparetto with quite a few men and women in suits looking like they are heading to work. There is also a group of boys with their lunchboxes heading to school.

I thought my ticket was still good so I didn’t buy another one. This proves to be a big mistake. They come on to check tickets and mine has expired. He is talking to me for a while and could tell I didn’t know what he is saying. Then he begins looking at the redhead little schoolboy as if the boy knows me. The boy keeps shrugging and I keep loooking at him with a completely puzzled look on my face. Finally he hands me a fine and I have to pull out money and pay it on the spot. It is about $30 so it could be much worse.

I get to the airport and again run into everyone I saw in Venice. The friend is there that my client was looking for and I tell him and he says that he has been told the same thing by about twenty different people. And then she walks in and is yelling his name out. We laugh and go talk to her.

I touch down 72 hours after having departed Venice hoping that I was not gone long enough to suffer much from the jetlag. I get home and crash until the next morning when I have to go to work.
