Have you ever left on a trip with a destination unknown to you? When all you knew was the date you were leaving and the weather?

Our friend David called us on the telephone one day and said, "Okay, get ready for another mystery trip! If you thought the last one was fun, you won't believe THIS one!"

The last one was a celebration of his 50th birthday in October of 2000. He surprised 10 friends with an all-expenses paid trip to the Grand Lido Braco Resort in Jamaica for 5 days. For the few months leading up to the trip he gave us clues regarding what to bring (golf clubs, beach clothes, water guns), but of course nothing that actually gave away the location. Not knowing was part of the fun! Then we arrived at the airport gate for Air Jamaica – welcome, mon! For 5 beautiful Jamaican days we ate fabulous food, swam to the pool-bar for foo-foo drinks, had palm trees painted on our toenails, and learned to reggae on the beach at the seafood buffet under the stars. A few of us even came home with beads and braids in our hair. What a generous amazing friend! Little did we know.....

Since I'm always planning every detail of our ChickTrips tours to Italy each year, it's a little disconcerting to not plan anything and simply GO. But it's also very liberating!

David's next Mystery Trip was planned to start on October 16, 2003. He had invited six of us this time, three couples: Carla and Bill, Ruth and Howard, and John and me. We’ve been friends for 25 years and have shared each other’s good times and bad times. We’ve traveled together, played poker together, watched our children grow up, and watched ourselves grow older. David’s sense of fun reminds us that there is no time to slow down. These minutes need to count and there are plenty of memories still to come.
