As the Beatles once sang in a song: "Life is what happens when we are making other plans." The truth of this statement will be evident by the time you finish reading of our adventure in Italy, 2005.
We had been planning this trip, our third to Italy, for over seven months. Last fall we spent a week in Venice and a week in Florence. This trip was for 25 days. We had hit the big time with a Slow Travel focus. With excitement and some anxiety over being away for such a long time, I approached the final weeks in a bit of a panicked state.
I was running out of time to learn as much Italian as I had planned and the trusty, beloved mini-notebooks, a compilation of information we culled from the Slow Travel site, NY Times travel sections, travel books, travel magazines, and the internet weren't miniaturized yet. These notebooks had proved invaluable in our Italy trip last fall.
It rained for a over a week in New Jersey and we had our final fine art and craft show to produce in an outdoor venue. I was so stressed I couldn't eat and that never happens. The good news was that I hit my all time low weight; the number I had wanted to see before we left for this 25 days of eating wonderful food.
Amazingly, the notebooks were finished and the show with 200 fine artists and crafters from all over the country was a success, despite 50 mph winds on Sunday. More amazingly, I woke up the morning we were leaving, the 18th of October, and all the stress and anxiety was gone.
I was off to my hairdressers to get my hair colored since as I had explained to my husband, the "root police" would not let me back into the country if my gray was peeking through. By 2:30 in the afternoon, we were off to Newark to begin our adventure.
