Page 6 of 13: Monday, January 24 - A Couple of Runs

Our alarm, the “church” goes off again this morning at 0800. Avalanche cannons can be heard going off quite often. It’s still snowing but not as heavily as yesterday. We eventually make it to the slopes at 1030. One run from Rocher de Bellevarde to La Daille and it’s time for lunch. We take lunch at Les Tufs. The bus driver is two for two on his recommendations.

Following lunch we elect to take the Funival back to the top. The Funival is a unique “lift.” It’s really a train that runs up a rail about a thousand yards and disappears into a hole in the mountain. Somewhere in the middle of the mountain you slow a bit and pass the downhill train. Since there is only one pair of rails (at the beginning and end) and since the train is being pulled up the mountain by cable you figure out how this little technical miracle happens! You never exit the mountain. The train stops in a station; you get out and walk to an exit cut into the side of the mountain very close to the exit of the L’Olympique téléphérique at the top of Rocher de Bellevarde.

The weather has deteriorated. We can hardly see the slope. It’s just like Saturday. We struggle to get back to La Daille. The bus ride and walk up to the apartment nearly kill CJ. A siesta is in order. Claude and Marine go to shop and after showering, we begin cocktail hour without them. Claude had set cocktails for 6:30. They return around seven. We dine at Scala, the restaurant across from the church. CJ has the risotto with black truffle sauce: a most excellent selection. Carol has tagliatelli with fresh lobster sauce: very good but the risotto still wins.
