The Veiled Woman
What a glorious day today is! This is my last day in this lovely city. After packing my bags, and making sure everything is ready to go tomorrow, I meet M. & D. and we spend the day hanging out together. Nothing special, just a café crème or two, a plate of frites, a slice of plum tarte…this is such a peaceful and lovely day. The sun shines, the breeze is cool and refreshing, the company is divine and the setting perfection.
Later, we meet at my apartment for dinner. I've shopped at my neighbourhood stores and shops for this meal, wanting to make it special for all of us. I've not been the best company this week, I've not been my usual self and I am feeling really miserable about that. Although I understand that it was brought about by events beyond my control, I still wish I'd been better able to handle the crisis.
It has been an interesting week. I have been wrung out emotionally, stretched to the limit of my usual good nature, hammered by the difficulty of dealing with the events of the past week in a place where I am totally unfamiliar with the necessary procedures for reporting a theft. Now, after wrangling a few extra days here, I don't want to leave! I've just begun enjoying myself, and it's time to go home...
After dinner, we clean up the dishes and put everything away, it’s time for them to leave and for me to get some sleep before tomorrow’s departure. I say goodnight and hug and kiss each person as they leave.
My son is last to go, and we hug... and cry and hug again. He looks at me, and says, “Wow, Mom! A whole month in Europe! Congratulations!”
After they leave, and after the tears dry, I wander through this stunning apartment, memorizing every thread of drapery fabric, each plate and bowl in the cupboard and every corner of the place. I will come back again. I will do better the next time, I hope.
My alarm is set for 5:30 A.M. tomorrow morning, and I am ready to go home. There is a part of me that wants to stay, but not a big enough part that I would stay rather than leave. There will be another trip to France for me, and it will be a longer stay, that I know for certain.
