Page 1 of 10: First I Had to Talk Him Into It

My future husband and I were both in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany when we met in 1977. It was my first time away from my hometown of New York City and I wanted to travel all over Europe. He'd been in Germany for nine years and didn't want to go anywhere.

So when I found out the USO was offering a trip to Venice and Rome, I knew I'd have a tough sell. That was putting it mildly. He absolutely refused to go. And when I said I'd go without him, he told me to have a nice trip.

I signed up for the trip, and the day before we were to leave, the USO told me the trip would be cancelled unless one more person signed up. He still wouldn't go, and the trip was cancelled.

Yes, I have held this against him for 29 years.

Oh, I've gone to both places several times since then. I switched from the Army to the Navy Reserve in 1988 and did active duty in Germany and Italy. My daughter and I went to Germany, Italy and Greece when she graduated from community college. And over the years I've realized that my husband wouldn't have enjoyed Venice anyway.

But he lived for the mini-series "Rome" on HBO, and never misses a special on gladiators, Julius Caesar, or anything else related to Rome. I told him that Rome was even more incredible than all the shows he'd seen, and I couldn't believe he didn't want to go there.

And he said, "Well, maybe I do want to go there."
