Report 992: Sorrento - Beautiful One Day, Perfect the Next

It was our last day in San Gimignano. We saw Sherry’s husband off in a private car transfer to Florence airport for his return flight to Australia then had one last shopping spree at our favorite handbag shop, Le Torri in Via San Giovanni. The newest stock came in the palest shade of pink, a handbag for Sherry and a wallet for me. The next morning, at 6 a.m., we let ourselves out of the hotel and wheeled our luggage down the hill to the car park to begin the drive to Sorrento.

As Sherry drove, I kept watch for hilltop towns and castles and wished we had longer so that we could have explored each one. A few Autogrill stops later we reached the outskirts of Naples where I took some home movie footage of snow on top of Mt Vesuvius. Sherry did the driving (brilliantly) and was the trip photographer.

As we continued towards the coast, the air seemed to grow warmer. Orchards, olive groves and flowering shrubs led us to our little hotel on Via Califano, around noon. Then, up the stairs to rooms with incredible views overlooking the Bay of Naples. We left the unpacking for later. Our aim was to relax, enjoy the balmy sea air and absorb all the magic waiting for us in the afternoon Sorrento sunshine.
