A basic, no frills B&B; it's major plus is it's convenient location, very near railroad station and the city center.

A word about who we are and what we were looking for: 3 adults, ages 63, 73 and 80, traveling via public transportation, needing a double or twin and a single ensuite. We did not need (or want to pay for) luxury but did want a pleasant place, clean, in a safe area for walking at night, moderately-priced and comfortable.

We chose this B&B because they had rooms available at the last minute, with the bonus of a great location. The building is showing its age; the rooms were basic and somewhat dreary but adequate. Things generally shabby and showed a lack of attention: there was a hot water pot in the room but we had to ask for tea bags; there was no TV remote and even after we asked, one was never provided; the beds were very lumpy; several lights needed bulbs; there was no hair dryer (the only place we stayed in for six weeks without one).

Beds were made and fresh towels provided daily. There was a full breakfast which was fine; the owner was helpful with things to do and see.

We really liked the location and felt the negatives not to be so great as to make our stay unpleasant. We were by then used to the high prices in England but felt even so the price was not really good value: £65/double and £55/single.

When I got home, I checked tripadvisor and some other sites and found a number of very negative reviews of Beckett House. Our experience was not as bad as some of these reviewers reported but I feel travelers should be aware of Beckett House's limitations before considering a stay there.
