Knocklayd is owned and looked after by Susan and Jonathan Cardale. It is a rambling house with a delightful garden that is just being restored. Upon arrival we were welcomed warmly and offered a tray of tea, which is always a thoughtful touch. We, including our Welsh Terrier, were introuduced to their 3 dogs and thankfully we all seemed to like each other! We were shown up to our beautiful room which enjoys views over the naval college up river and over Dartmouth -- absolutely lovely! There are 3 rooms used for B & B. Ours was the largest wih a tiny ensuite toilet and wash hand basin. A shower is screened from the rest of the room but there is also a full bathroom across the corridor for guests use should they so desire. Our room was decorated in eau de nil and gold/cream with beautiful linens, curtains and some antique furniture. Everything had been thought of: a tea tray with many types of tea, a vacuum flask of fresh milk, coffee, shortbread, hot chocolate, coffee, bottled water, etc., etc. There were beautiful fluffy towels, an abundance of hot water, bathrobe, slippers, good lighting, a sewing kit, a vanity kit, excellent storage ... just about everything you'd expect from a 5* hotel with extras!! We slept very well. The bed was supremely comfortable and our room was wonderfully quiet. Breakfast was magnificent with excellent coffee, fruits, yoghurt, cereals, fresh fruit compote, full English Breakfast, Full New England Breakfast, Continental Breakfast, toast, or a combination of all of the above, all freshly prepared. As well as all the this our hosts were so warm and welcoming it was an absolute treat to stay there. They even looked after our little dog whilst we went to a family Ruby (40th) Wedding Anniversary and when we visited 2 nearby glorious National Trust gardens, Greenway and Coleton Fishacre. This is very much someone's home so it is not for people who like a corporate hotel feel and probaly not for you if you dislike dogs. We were very happy there and feel that £70 per room per night including the 5* breakfasts is an absolute steal. Single travellers are charged around £40 in any of the 3 rooms so that is wonderful value for money, too. Dartmouth is a pretty pricy area so I encourage you to go now before word gets out! We ate well in Dartmouth at The Castle Hotel on 2 evenings but remember the last ferry from Dartmouth to Kingswear is at 10:55pm !
