We stayed here on the first and last nights of our eight-day walking tour of the Cotswolds. Cheltenham is located on the edge of the Cotswolds, and although it's distinctly different than the traditional Cotswolds towns and villages, it is a very interesting place to visit. The Milton House is a listed building located on a quiet side street in a row of Regency townhouses. The hotel is run by Claude, who is originally from Monaco. There are eight rooms. We had a very beautiful room for three; very tasteful in decor. The afternoon we arrived we had drinks in the little conservatory in a self-service bar. Breakfast is included and is served in an attractive morning room, a more elegant approach to the traditional English breakfast (i.e. herbs in the scrambled eggs). We chatted with a couple of other guests (one American couple) who were all returning visitors to the hotel. Claude saved our lives on the last night of our trip. It was a banking holiday (Queen's Jubilee celebration) and we had planned to hike from Stow to Bourton-on-the-Water where supposedly we could catch a bus back to Cheltenham. It would have been too far to walk all the way to Cheltenham. The bus, however, never came at the scheduled time and we learned from a policeman that the buses were not running on the holiday after all. We could not reach the only taxi-driver in Bourton. My husband was about to start flagging people down on the street and offering to pay them to drive us to Cheltenham, when I decided to call Claude. He was so helpful and made several calls to locate a taxi in Cheltenham to collect us and bring us to the Milton House. When we arrived in our hiking clothes, Claude was there to welcome us and offer a cup of tea. The hotel is located just around the corner from the beautiful Montpellier district and the Imperial Gardens. We enjoyed walking around the town with its beautiful architecture, gardens and Promenade shopping area. We hiked out of town on the first day past the famous Pittsville Pump Room and by the big racecourse. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
