I have tried to find a list of the historically significant cathedrals. The few cathedrals that we have visited from this list were incredible to see and well worth seeking out. A cathedral is the church where the Bishop has his seat. For example, the Abbey in Bath is not a cathedral because the Bishop of Bath and Wells has his seat in Wells. 14 Cathedrals From Walking England's Cathedral CitiesThe book "Walking England's Cathedral Cities", by Rowland Mead (NTC/Contemporary Publishing Company, 2000) list these 14 Cathedrals in England.
Wells Cathedral, in Somerset 62 Cathedrals Listed by English HeritageEnglish Heritage announced £1 million of grants for repairs to cathedrals (January 2005). The article states that England has 61 cathedrals. I wrote to them to get the list. They sent me a list of 62 Cathedrals.
