Classic, good quality fish and chips in pretty market town.

Directions: From the central Bedford Square, take the road between the church and the banks -about 5 minutes walk. (NB cars cannot go all the way, due to one way system but can usually park just around the corner or in nearby car park in evening.

Jack & Jills Fish and Chip shop is very popular with both the local population and the holiday makers and hikers staying in the many rental cottages around this pretty Dartmoor market town. There are two sides to the shop - to the left a clean and pleasant restaurant and to the right a takeaway counter. We go there when we visit family in the area, so normally use the take away side (the food comes from the same kitchen).

The fish is excellent quality, cooked in a crispy batter (those with iron wills and a respect for their waistlines cut open the batter and just eat the fish which has beeen steamed within - but it is very tempting!). The chips are chunky, crisp and fluffy inside. They cook in frequent, small batches so the food is not left sitting in warming containers to get soggy.

For two teen girls, myself and a grandmother (with a surprisingly large appetite!) we usually order four small cod portions (we find the standard size too big), two large orders of chips to share between us and two gherkins (pickles). You will be asked if you want salt and/or vinegar put on it before it is wrapped in paper and then bagged, which keeps it hot for the short journey home.

This came to about 13.50 in total in August 2008. It will be slightly more expensive to 'eat in' on the other side, with proper plated service.

There is another branch at the other end of town (in Brook Street) on much smaller premises, which I don't think is as popular.
