Petersfield: Folly's Wine and Ale House

10-12 College St

Closing day: Sunday

Reviewed by: Jeff Holmes from NH, review #2153

When: 2006

More of a upscale pub, than a restaurant - casual and full of 30-40 year olds who love their footie, cricket or rugby when there's a game on!

Directions: Going south into Petersfield on College Street, on the right just before College turns into Dragon Street at the corner of High Street.

Although Folly has a dinner menu (limited), most patrons seem to go for the lighter fare and "finger food" because this place is not quiet and it is crowded.

The menu consists of what an American would find at a typical family restaurant and is not extraordinary: Starters, Tortillas, Baps, Salads, Risotto, etc.. The thing here is the scene. Lots of young and middle aged good looking professionals and workman all mingling around a small bar and seating area, with an eye on the telly. The barkeeps are young, attractive and attentive, the conversation is friendly, fun and funny. Sports telecasts draw mobs of fans, especially if the UK National Team in any sport is playing the National Team from Australia - although Ireland drew a crowd, too.

If you want to while away an afternoon, this is suitable dining and drinking in which to do it. If you want casual, catch-as-catch-can dining, this is suitable, if you want to see some local color, this is suitable. For an after dinner drink, I'd wander over to Folly on the way home.

Anything else in Petersfield is upscale or downscale by comparison, so Folly cuts a wide swath in the market for those lookng for a comedy show, a local combo or a big game telecast and a relaxing night where "everyone knows your name."

Please note: There are two separate business entities in this same building structure. The review noted here is with regards to the business on the ground floor and should not be confused nor is related to the business located on the first floor with a similar name.
