Trendy, upscale Indian restaurant. Emphasis on presentation, clear flavors, very different from the usual Indian restaurant food. Set menus a good value.

Directions: Near Covent Garden Tube stop, corner of Drury Lane.

Moti Mahal is an upscale restaurant in an elegant space. Prices are fairly high. There's a glass wall in the dining room, where you can see the busy kitchen. Comfortable seating, and lovely decor. Service more brisk than I like at dinner, although it's probably good if you are pressed for time.

The menu has many very interesting variations, and almost feels like fusion Indian-French more than traditional Indian. We opted for the set dinner menu for 30 pounds -three courses with several choices for each. We thought the starters were wonderful - I had a gingery crab cake served with a little piece of spiced salmon and chutney; and my husband had grilled mushroom with vegetable fritter and smoky eggplant. Our mains of an herb-crusted piece of lamb and tilapia with coconut chutney were tasty, but didn't knock our socks off. The potatoes, raita and naan served with the meal were excellent. A final dish of grilled fruit, a tiny warm pudding and a piece of kulfi was excellent. The servings were small, but it was still plenty of food. Lots of visual appeal.

I'd love to return on someone else's nickel to explore more of the menu!
