A disappointing meal followed by an even more disappointing response to my complaint.

Average to weak service plus food that was patchy but largely way below par. Not what we were expecting from a not-cheap establishment (25 pounds per head for the bar brasserie a la carte lunch: there were four of us eating) with a fine reputation.

My dish (the pheasant) was masterly in design, and the leg was brilliant – but the breast was dry. Two people ordered the ribeye. Both found it difficult to cut and tough to eat. The person eating the fourth meal is a chef. He dismissed it as ‘duck on a bed of baked beans’ and I was struck by the small size of the portion of meat.

I need to balance these adverse comments with some pluses: the desserts were good, with one (the sticky toffee pudding) exceptional, and the Torrontes was wonderful.

In addition to being disappointed, I don’t think we received value for money.

When we complained, this is what the restaurant manager wrote: "I am sorry you felt disappointed with your visit. We take all comments seriously and these matters have been addressed with the relevant staff. However I must point out that in the Bar Brasserie the level of service is not as high as in the Restaurant.

I regret that we disappointed you on this occasion."

This response is even less impressive than the food.
