Attractive pub/restaurant with excellent food, pretty garden dining in warm weather.

Directions: On the A1102 (Church Road) west out of Stowupland

Stowuplands is an attractive village near Stowmarket in Suffolk. The pub has a cozy bar, and several small dining rooms. Outside is a pretty garden where tables can be booked in warm weather. It's a popular place, and even on a January Monday, our host had to reserve a table for lunch.

The food is a nice mix of traditional cooking and some other influences, all very well prepared. The menu changes daily. Our party of four especially enjoyed a roasted curried parsnip soup, and a stilton souffle for starters. We had fantastic mains of bangers and mash; risotto with gorgonzola, roasted pears and walnuts; sauteed liver with onions served on a crispy potato and vegetable mixture; and sauteed fish in white wine and herbs. Each dish was served with a wonderful platter of three seasonal vegetables--roasted golden beets, sauteed leeks, and red cabbage. Main dishes ranged from 8 to 14 pounds.

We didn't have room for dessert, but the chalkboard list looked delicious.
