2bed/1bath cottage in Chipping Campden, Heart of England
WhenJune 2004, one week ReviewFirst, go back and read Libbie's review of this cottage from 2001. It's still accurate in 2004. This cottage is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs cute. The owner really has made it comfortable and, whether by car or on foot, it's the perfect base for exploring the English countryside. The agent, Sheila Rolland wasn't able to meet us but made sure we had a key and specific directions. She left a delightful greeting for our arrival. The dining table was set for tea and included a scrumptious cake from one of the local bakeries. It was just what we needed after a harried drive from London. Sheila dropped by later in the day to make sure all was well and answer any questions we might have. Pear Tree is remarkably quiet. Although there are close neighbors, we never noticed them. If you like lounging about and reading as I do, you'll have plenty of choices. The comfy livingroom has two couches with over-sized pillows. The adjacent sunroom is bright and cheery with several rattan seating options. Or you can sit out back in the cozy, colorful English garden. There's a binder stuffed with information on the area and things to do. The countryside is criss-crossed by public footpaths that lead to breathtaking vistas. If you like lavender, check out the Snowshill Lavender Farm (about 10-15 minutes by car). It's amazing to break over a hill and see 50 acres of lavender in full bloom. The farm also has a small tearoom where you can even sample lavender scones. If you like to prepare your own meals, you'll have fun shopping at the local butcher, green grocer or one of two bakeries. If you choose to eat out, try the Red Lion or Lygon Arms Pubs (within a few minutes walk) for great food and very friendly service. At least drop by for a pint with the locals. The only change I'd make to Libbie's review is that the cookware needs upgrading. There's just one skillet. It's stainless steel and warped so it makes for a challenge. The addition of a cast iron skillet and stockpot would be much appreciated. Pear Tree Cottage was a delightful. Even the gnome-sized door between the kitchen and dining room was fun after we sixfooters remembered to duck. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
