4bed/2bath cottage near Gort in Galway, Ireland WhenJune 2001, 1 week LocationCoole Lodge is the restored hunting lodge of Lady Augusta Gregory's Coole Park, near the centrally located city of Gort in Galway. The lodge has been carefully restored by its owners and is about 1/4 mile from Coole Park - easy walking distance. The property is surrounded by a lovely garden and the nearest houses are several hundred meters away. Nearby AmenitiesIt's a few minutes by car from the town of Gort, where you will find all kinds of shops and restaurants. You'll need a car to stay in this rental; ample parking is provided. The House/ApartmentThe lodge was restored several years ago and its primary stones still remain, though the current owners have created a cozy and characterful ambiance with lots of historical pictures and artifacts. GardenThe walled garden is nice, though there's some road noise from a major nearby road. There is a picnic table at which you can dine. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasExcellent, comfortable furnishings; firm beds; well-stocked kitchen with clearly marked utility devices (such as hot-water heater and laundry facilities). The lodge is immaculately clean. Problems or BonusesThough there is some road noise from the nearby Gort road, the cottage is very quiet and calming. Agency and Representatives (and price)The owners rescued and restored the lodge themselves. (Lady Gregory's mansion in Coole Park was destroyed early in the 20th century and never rebuilt, so the Coole Lodge is all that remains habitable of her estate). They were friendly and welcoming and quite helpful. The cottage is stocked with many books and travel guides pertaining to the area and its rich history, which made staying there a pleasure. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? We recommend this rental without hesitation. Things to do in this areaIt's a good central location for nearby Yeats attractions (Coole Park, Thoor Ballylee) and day trips to places like the Aran Islands, local Norman castles and ruins, and jaunts into Galway City (about 45 minute drive). Gort is lively and has all the shops one would need, including two grocery stores and some organic foods shops. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
