Review 1407: Hideaways, Brown Street Apartment

Review by Pauline from NM who is a SlowTrav Contributor

2bed/loft/2bath apartment in center of Salisbury, West Country

Apartment over Magic Carpets, Salisbury, Wiltshire, photo by Pauline Kenny, May 2005

May 2005, 1 week

The Brown Street Apartment is a ETC 4 star and is outfitted to that level, but the location was not a 4 star location. The apartment is located above the owner's carpet store. The entrance is in a parking lot off a commercial street. Still, the location is quiet in the evenings. A bit of street noise. During the day you can hear the radio playing in the store below.

In some ways the location is perfect because you are in the center of town two blocks from the Market Square and all the shops, cafes, restaurants; a few blocks from the Salisbury Cathedral.

Nearby Amenities

You are two blocks from the center of Salisbury, with everything you need. Restaurants, shops, tea rooms, tourist office, etc. You can walk to small specialty shops, and to a Tesco or Sainsburys (5 minutes) or a Waitrose (15 minutes).

The House/Apartment

The apartment is in an old brick building. The entrance to the apartment is beside the back door to the owner's carpet store. From the front door, you go up a flight of stairs to the apartment, which is large and all on one level (except for one or two steps and the loft). At the front is one big open room with high pitched ceilings and beams, with the living room (big TV with the standard five channels, DVD, VCR), dining area (seats six), and kitchen (gas stovetop, oven, under the counter small fridge, dishwasher, washer/dryer combination machine). The kitchen has good pots and pans, toaster, microwave, tea kettle, unusable coffee machine.

This main room has several windows and is bright, but the view is to the parking lot or some rooftops.

Down a hallway to a bathroom with tub (no window), a bedroom with twin beds (no window, but there is a skylight), and the master bedroom with a small double bed and ensuite bathroom (no window, large shower). Nice windows in the master bedroom, but they overlook a bicycle repair shop! The shop guys are out there working from about 9:00am and if you are very lucky they leave the door to the toilet open, so you look straight into it.

The apartment is very large probably 1000 square feet. There is even a loft above the main room with another set of twin beds (not private, but would be good for kids).

A parking space comes with the apartment.

There is a small balcony, but it overlooks the parking lot.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings are all new and of Ikea quality. The bathrooms and kitchen are top quality. The couch in the living room is modern and nice looking, but not comfortable. The bed in the master bedroom is a small double.

Problems or Bonuses

My main complaints: - The location. You are in the middle of a commercial location. The front door is off a parking lot behind commercial stores. The balcony overlooked the parking lot, so was not usable (there was no outdoor furniture on it). But, you are only a block from a very pretty old part of town. It is just the one block the apartment is located on that is very modern commercial feeling. - While all the kitchen equipment was good, the coffee machine wins the award for the worst machine I have ever seen. - The apartment is too new or something I smelled the outgassing of the new things (or perhaps the chemical odor was coming up from the owner's carpet store below). But we are sensitive to chemicals and chemical smells, so this would not affect everyone.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner runs the Magic Carpets store below the apartment. When you arrive, you checkin with one of the guys in the shop.

Hideaways was fine to deal with. They do not mention the entrance off a parking lot in their listing, but they probably would have mentioned it if I had phoned them and asked more questions. I was having a hard time finding a place with a phone in Salisbury and booked this place because of the high speed Internet.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Maybe, maybe not. It is worth the money if you have a large group - there are beds for six. The location is ugly, but is a great location for Salisbury.
