Review 2757: Dublin Farm Cottages, Fern & Heather Cottage

cottages on property outside Dublin, Ireland

When

May 2006, 3 weeks

Location

On the outskirts of Dublin, set in the foothills of the mountains. Isolated with views across the valley to other farms and down over Dublin City.

Nearby Amenities

Nearest pub was less than five minutes drive, award winning shopping centres ten minutes drive. A walk to the local pub would definitely earn a pint of the best.

The House/Apartment

Three old style, newly built two story stone cottages. We stayed in both Fern and Heather cottages, as we kept extending our stay as we enjoyed it so much, these were attached while the Loft is separated by a walkway. Even though the cottages are attached thick stone walls provide high levels of privacy.

Garden

Small opened grassed area in front overlooking the valley and small shared back garden with clothesline and garden seating.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The cottages were clean and comfortable, everything was fairly new and well maintained. Best thing was to sit in the comfy chairs in the lounge room reading a book, sipping hot chocolate and looking through the double glazed windows at the rain falling outside.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

Beds were good and well supplied with linen and blankets. Bathrooms were good, with an extra toilet as well.

Kitchen

Basic kitchen equipment supplied, microwave, dishwasher and fridge and stove. Adequate for simple cooking with enough plates, cups and cutlery for everyone.

Problems or Bonuses

If you get out out early and are quiet enough you can get to see the deer, badgers and foxes running around in front of the cottages, and if you are very careful you can catch a glimpse of stoats dodging along the stone walls. There's always lots of sheep and cattle as well as rabbits running everywhere. We were lucky enough to help our host take his sheep down to lower paddocks, wandering along stone wall lined country roads herding sheep, all the while less that 15km from the centre of Dublin, which was something my family is not likely to forget very soon.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Booked directly with the owner who speaks English with a delightful Irish accent. They met us on arrival and were locally available whenever we needed any assistance. Very friendly and helpful.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would highly recommend it to anyone. The location, the cottages themselves and the host made this a magic holiday location for my family

Things to do in this area

Excellent food at the local pub, the centre of Dublin is only 14kms away. I would suggest an Irish experience with dinner and show at Taylors Three Rock (less than 10 minutes drive) or Johnny Fox's pub (about 20 minutes)and that's slow driving. Behind the cottages are miles of walking trails through forests passing ancient burial cairns and stone age passage tombs before joining the Wicklow Way.
