2bed/1bath row house in Chipping Campden, Heart of England
WhenJuly 2009, 1 week LocationMiller's Cottage is a charming row house built in 1765 located in the center of Chipping Campden, right off High Street near St. James Church. The street is fairly busy since it is the intersection of two routes in and out of town (High Street/Station Road) but we did not mind since the location was so convenient. Nearby AmenitiesThe cottage was a short walk away from everything, including a very conveniently located co-op grocery store that is open daily to 10pm, and directly across the street from the Eight Bells Inn, with a restaurant/pub. All the other restaurants in town are also a short walk away. The House/ApartmentWe loved this little house - it has a charming timber-beamed living/dining room with a stone fireplace downstairs. There is a tiny but cute kitchen (one person at a time only!) with a dishwasher (a luxury in a lot of UK rentals). There are steep winding stairs to the second floor, where there is a bedroom with a four poster bed and a small bath with tub/shower combination. Another flight of steep stairs goes to the attic bedroom, which has two twin beds. An outdoor patio garden has a small shed, in which you'll find the washer/dryer and also the bikes which are available for your use. The house is tiny but it was perfectly situated and we were so happy to have found a rental directly in Chipping Campden that allowed children AND was available for a week in July. When we arrived and saw how cute it was, we felt like we'd hit the jackpot! The only downside as mentioned below is the busy street and the windows, which do not keep out any of the noise. On Friday night, we were awakened by passersby leaving the nearby pub, but otherwise the rest of the stay was peaceful. GardenThere is a small outdoor patio with table/chairs which was perfect for dinners/lunches. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe entire house (except the kitchen) is carpeted and the carpet is fairly worn and there are the usual issues with the age of the house (built in 1765) - the ceilings slope, the downstairs with its timbered ceiling and thick stone walls could be dark even during the brightest day, the floor in the bedroom is noticeably uneven, the kitchen is tiny, just big enough for one person, the dining table when unfolded takes up a lot of space in the living area, and the stair steps can be tricky to navigate, but all this just added to the character of the house for us. If you are a big TV watcher, you may be disappointed in the tiny TV set but we rarely turned it on so didn't mind. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe bedrooms were small but comfortable and our children loved the attic bedroom. The shower in the bathroom wasn't the best we've ever had but was the hot water supply was more than adequate. KitchenThe kitchen is tiny but has a dishwasher and pretty view out onto the back garden. We enjoyed cooking here and just tried not to both be in the kitchen at the same time - the floor area is about three feet wide at the narrowest corner so just enough room for one person to cook. Once we found the pots and pans (located in the cabinet directly over the stove, which I originally thought was a false fronted cabinet) cooking was a breeze. Problems or BonusesThere is a charge for bed linens if you stay less than a week, and for towels if you do not bring your own. Agency and Representatives (and price)Sue, who owns and manages the cottage but does not live nearby, was pleasant to deal with and we had no problems. We thought the weekly rental fee in July was very reasonable - just £375. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?I would absolutely recommend this cottage to others. It is perfectly situated in Chipping Campden, charming and historic, and we really enjoyed our stay. Since it is not listed on any of the major rental sites we feel lucky to have stumbled upon it and considered it a great value. Things to do in this areaSue mentioned the nearby leisure centre and indoor pool in her note to renters and it was a hit with the kids! All the other attractions in/near Chipping Campden are already well documented - it is a fantastic base for exploring the Cotswolds.
