My husband and I stayed at the Big Sur Lodge for a five days in September for our anniversary and want to stay there again this year with our kids. The hotel is located in a state park in the heart of Big Sur. It is not difficult to find the sign on Hwy 1 for Pfeiffer State Park, but we did pass it and had to turn around. The lodge has a small store with all the necessities at high, but not exorbitant prices. Though the atmosphere and menu of the restaurant at the Big Sur Lodge didn't compare to Nepenthe and Ventana, the food was very good. Just outside the restaurant was an ice cream counter which was popular with the families. The atmosphere is homey and comfortable. The cottage style rooms are spread out; three or four are connected together. Each has it's own deck or porch. On the walk from the lodge to our room we passed redwood trees and deer. The rooms do not have TV or phones. Ours was extremely clean and looked almost new. The walls were very thin and the floor echoed. Several times we sat out on our deck and enjoyed the view of the woods. The pool was heated, but felt cold still, though I'm sure the kids would not have noticed. Within a 1/4 mile from the cottages are three or four trails into the Pfeiffer State Forest. We took an easy hike a little over a mile to a waterfall. Redwood trees towered above us. One fallen trunk looked like a giant chair. There were many families with small children passing us on the trail. We used this as our base for the week. We visited the Big Sur sites and Carmel and Monterey. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
