Lower-cost option three fast subway stops to Manhattan. If you can get a cheap off-the-rack rate and can accept some drawbacks, it's good deal.

Hotel costs in Manhattan are outrageous, and since we go often to visit family we're always looking for less expensive options. Long Island City is the area of Queens just across the Triboro Bridge from midtown East. We did some Priceline bids, and for $99 landed at this new hotel. If you don't mind three subway stops to Manhattan, cheap furnishings and a non-glamorous location, it's a good option.

You can drive, but there's limited parking. There did seem to be street parking around the hotel. The neighborhood isn't fancy, but felt perfectly safe. There's an oldstyle diner opposite the subway entrance; looked like a good breakfast option. You take the N or Q subway to the 39th Ave stop, and the hotel is just a three block walk up 39th street. The desk people were friendly, there's a pleasant lobby, and an onside restaurant.

Since we got a cheaper room we didn't have a view, but rooms on the Manhattan side would have a beautiful view to the City. Our room was clean and comfortable, with new mattress and linens, industrial-grade carpeting and particle-board furnishings. The bathroom was clean, although the fittings were obviously from the discount side of the catalog. Free wifi that worked. There was no outside noise, although since the hallways were narrow, there was noise as other guests passed by or shut doors.

So, I'd pay up to $150 for this place, and I'd also be comfortable investigating other options in Long Island City.
