Beautiful old hotel on the beach in San Diego.

We spent a few nights here in November 2004 and we loved it. I have always wanted to stay in this hotel, but it is very expensive (watch for a sale). On this trip, we were booked into another San Diego hotel, but our room had so much air freshener that we could hardly breathe. At 11pm I called the Hotel Del and they gave us a good last-minute rate on a room. We checked in at midnight!

Our room was in the older part of the hotel, looking out to the large gardens in between the buildings. You can get rooms with ocean views, but some of those rooms look onto the parking lot on one side - so be sure you get one of the better seaview rooms if you decide to spring for that (we didn't). There are also some modern buildings with rooms - but I loved being in the main old building.

The hallways were wide enough to drive a car down! Our room was lovely and large with a nice balcony with a couple of chairs. The room was furnished nicely and was very comfortable.

The hotel is huge and has a few restaurants and shops. We had brunch at the restaurant and it was good. The lobby is big and beautiful. You take a manned cage elevator up to the rooms. It did not feel overly fussy - it was a beautiful, well run, older hotel in a prime location.
