We loved the feeling of this small hotel (37 rooms) with Victorian style inside and out. In all dealings with staff we found them friendly and helpful. Our room was a Junior Suite for $149 per night. It featured a comfortable queen bed, small refrigerator, and six windows that could open and provided plenty of natural San Francisco light. The bathroom had a claw foot tub with rather complicated shower (hot/cold hard to regulate), lovely Gilchrist & Soames toiletries, and two lovely robes. Decor shown on the website was accurate. We are sound sleepers and loved having street activity to watch from this 5th floor room. Light sleepers may want to request a quiet location and/or plan to keep windows closed. For us the excellent hotel restaurant, Cafe Majestic, was a big plus. (See my review of it on SlowTrav.) Probably the biggest potential downside of this hotel is its location for those who want to walk to the major sites. Both Japantown and the Fillmore Street shopping area ARE walkable and there is a Whole Foods nearby. For other attractions, we quickly learned enough of the bus system to use it for easy access to the Financial District, Ferry Building, North Beach, and BART transit for our trip back home. See SF Muni site. Valet parking is available. In sum, we were enchanted by the hotel and look forward to using it as a base for future San Francisco getaways.
